William Hartigan, Troy NY b. 1845 Ireland
« on: Wednesday 21 September 11 10:53 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I am trying to find siblings of ggrandmother Ellen Ryan. born Tipperary c1855.  She had at least 1 brother - Thomas Ryan whose headstone is in the local cemetery but unfortunately that family is now gone apart from 1 elderly lady who married into the family and cannot remember any details. There is another headstone close by with the inscription "Erected (no date) by Mrs. William Hartigan of Troy, New York in memory of her father & mother, John & Mary Ryan died 1872 & 1891. Ellen Ryan had many sisters but unfortunately I don't know any of their first names and have yet to locate any of the families.  Acc.to Ellen's marriage cert, her father's name is John, I am not sure of mother's name.

Back to William, I found a 1900 Census listing in Troy, NY born 1845 with wife Norah, no children, arr U.S 1869.  Any help in finding any more info about this William would be appreciated.

Many thanks,
mm

Hello MM,

Think your couple are also on the 1905 Census of New York.

According to the 1900 Census - the couple married in 1868 and the immigration date was 1869.  So could the marriage have been in Ireland.  ???  Nora is listed as having no children. William was an St Engineer.

Sandra,

Thanks for that.  No new information but confirming the marriage was in 1868 before they arrived.  Unfortunately I can't find a William Hartigan marriage c1868 in the local village so probably be a dead end.

Hi Sandra,

On Family Search, found a William Hartigan marriage
https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.2/9SLX-DDH/p4
So it could be them, wondering why the marriage not showing on the Irish heritage site.

Will do some more research.  Thanks again for your help.

...

that's an extracted civil record - the RootsIreland/IFHF website has mostly parish records - but doesn't cover all parishes.

The clue to finding the full index reference in in the last line 'p 760'. This reference relates to the page number in the civil index. Once you find the relevant index details you can order a marriage cert from the GRO, which will show further details. Here are the cross matching references :

  Name: William Hartigan
  Registration district:   Tipperary
  Event type: Marriage
  Year: 1868
  Volume : 3 / Page: 760

  Name: Hanora Ryan
  [same references as William]

note the Tipperary reference is to the district covered by the town of that name.

see :

  Ordering Certs from GRO Roscommon

Details included on a Marriage Cert

Remember to check the Resource boards :  Ireland, Dublin, Antrim & Cork (and stickies at the top of other county sub-forums)

Hi MM,

That looks good.  Wonder where they are on the 1870/1880 Census  ??? Maybe mistrancribed - tried a few options but nothing coming up yet.

Can see from a posting on the link below that Hanora Hartigan was born about 1846 in Ireland Co Tipperary, she married William Hartigan about 1868, and she was in the 1911 census for Victoria Terrace, Kilkee, County Clare, Ireland.

There was a UK Incoming Passenger List - Mrs Hartigan and Wm Hartigan
Travelling New York to Queenstown. Ireland and arriving 30 March 1906 on the SS Celtic. Could be your couple.
