thomas and john strong
« on: Thursday 22 September 11 05:02 BST (UK) »
hoping someone can help me please before i go insane..
I am trying to find info on my ancestors, thomas and john strong they were brothers they were convicted and transported to tasmania from queenstown ireland on board the hydrabad in 1850.
We have been told they were from Tullamore Ireland.....where is tullamore???????????
I cannot find anything on them, also thomas paid for his mother mary strong to come to tassy she did in 1855 on board australasia ship. She was a widow.
On her papers and theirs it says they were from queens co.
Does anyone know where i can try and find birth records for thomas born abt 1831 and john born  1829.
Thank-you

There are actually four townlands in Ireland named Tullamore- one each in Tipperary, King's Co., Kerry and Clare. See www.thecore.com/seanruad to find townlands in Ireland.

To find Irish ancestors for such an early period you need to see if church records exist- you biggest problem at the moment is that you don't know exactly where the family came from.
Have a look at Introduction to Irish Records and My Ancestor came from Ireland - where do I start?.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

By what you say you probably have all the following but, in case not,  the Irish National Archives site has the following and an identical record for Thomas:

'Ireland-Australia transportation database'
STRONG, John
Trial place: King's County
Trial date:   10/03/1850
Crime desc: Assaulting habitation
Sentence: Transportation 10 yrs
Ship: HYDERABAD 00/09/1850
Document ref1: TR 10, p 137

You could try a local newspaper archive, although they tended to be a bit short of info on court cases, things like ages weren't reported the way they are today but it might help with where they were from.
