How do you know Sarah was his mother?  The 1861 and 1871 censuses show him as the grandson of Matthew & Ann Carnell

In 1861 - they are indexed as Corisle and Sarah has an older sister Alice who is also unmarried

Is any fathers name shown on his marriage cert?

it says on the 1861 and 1871 matthew and ann grandparenets sarah daughter and childrens mother sarah

No it doesn't - suggest you look at both images again - not the transcriptions

Clearly shown as grandson on both

I'm not saying she wasn't his mother - just that neither census entry confirm it
