Approved School
« on: Saturday 24 September 11 12:55 BST (UK) »
My late grandfather Alfred Quayle spent time in an approved school in the 1950's.  (He was form Douglas and I believe he was sentenced in Douglas Court)) Was there an approved school on the Island or would he have been sent to one on the mainland?
He died in Liverpool in 1967 and I know little about him or his forebears. Thanks.

there was secure accomodation for young offenders - I recently had it pointed out to me whilst walking with the footpaths group but can't immediately recall where it was ! (memory isnt what it was! ) however I don't know when it operated and when it closed - asking on a more general Manx forum might help eg try http://www.manxforums.com/forums/index.php? or http://www.isle-of-man.com/genealogy/messageboard/index.pl (where I know one of the contributors has a professional connection with the gaol)
any thing with a Manx Connection
