Williamson Drove, Walcot or Billinghay
« on: Sunday 25 September 11 04:07 BST (UK) »
I would like to find out the origion on the name of Williamson Drove.

Also is there anyway to find out just where it is on the censuses.

I have a copy of the 1881 but it only lists the area as Billinghay. Finding out who lived on Williamson Drove might give me some idea as to how it got its name.

Hoping someone can help me

1851 census. .at Fen Drove, Billinghay,

James Williamson , farmer of 12 acres,  aged 52, born Billinghay.

maybe,  He purchased the area , and changed the name to Williamson drove,

Thank you for your replies.
I think Williamson Drove is still there. I found a picture of it online so assume it is.

My father was born in North Kyme and I have traced his family back in that area but do not know who Williamson Drove was named after.

Fen Drove could have been Williamson Drove or maybe one of the other Fens.

I was hoping that somewhere I could find the Census number for Williamson Drove to check who lived there.

Anyone any ideas how I could find out.

Hello Jill

Williamson's Drove is still there, but I cannot remember who it is named after
Was it also called Parson's Drove?

There is no Fen Drove, it is Fen Road which leads down to a junction.  If you go right it is Green Drove then across the cross roads to The Hern.  In the eighteen hundreds Green Drove and The Hern was called Long Drove.

If you go left from Fen Road junction you go down Gravel Hills or Gravel Hill Drove as it is sometimes known. If you are in the fields adjacent to the road the road dips up and down like small hills.

In Billinghay there is a Billinghay Parish Office, and someone in the village runs a History Group.  If you contact the parish office by e-mail on :-  billinghaypc[at]googlemail.com (replace [at] with @)you might get a answer to your question.  If you google Billinghay Parish Council there is a web page with links to a bi-monthly magazine for the village.
Hope this Helps Lulis

Williamson's Drove ... Was it also called Parson's Drove?

They are parallel - see the map that I linked to http://www.streetmap.co.uk/map.srf?X=516007&Y=356382&A=Y&Z=115
