The Elizabeth who married John Thomas Lowe later went on to marry Joseph Meakin at St. Thomas's, Heaton Norris, 15 Apr 1850.

Joseph Meakin, 40, Widower, Bootmaker, Heaton Norris, John Meakin, Boot maker
Elizabeth Lowe(X), 35, Widow, , Heaton Norris, John Dobevan, Weaver
Witness: James Cronshaw, Saml. Barker

In 1851 the couple were in Stockport, and Elizabeth's place of birth is given as Prescot, and age as 39. This matches the baptism at St. Mary the Virgin, Prescot on 2 Jun 1811 (Lan-OPC):- Elizabeth Dunbavand - Daur of John Dunbavand & Margt
Born: 3 Apr 1811
Abode: Prescot
Occupation: Weaver

Hi Andrew

Thank you so much for all your research, and suggestions.

I followed up both lines of thought on this query and you are absolutely correct in your thinking that

Elizabeth/ Betsy Dunbavin was the daughter of Thomas Dunbavin and Alice Garnett, and the mother of the Illegitimate child Ann Dunbavin christened in Hale in 1832.  :D

I can now prove this link because I have found this order of filiation in the national archives , ( Record held at Lancashire records)

    Confirmation of both parents
        Hale, Lancashire, England
Hale. Order of filiation and maintenance of Ann, bastard child of Thomas Ireland of Speke, fisherman, and Betsy Dunbobbin, singlewoman QSP/2958/41 1831 6 Dec.

So I will now have to see a copy of the full Order of filiation, although I don't think it will give much more information, ( you never know ) Looks like a trip to Lancashire is needed.

But Great to have not only found her mother ...what a bonus also her father Thomas Ireland  ;D

Andrew I can;t thank you enough for all your hard work and research.

Kind Regards Judi

Andrew I see you  are researching the Dunbavin family also, if you want the information on Ann Dundavin born 1831 christened 1832 Hale, I have her tracked and documented until her death, and would happily send you all that information to add to your tree should you want it.

Ann Dunbavin is my 3rd Great Grandmother.

The Bastardy Orders rarely give much genealogical information beyond what has been indexed by the Lancashire Record Office. The really depressing thing is that virtually all such records are on pre-printed forms - fill in the blanks quickly in court. Often there was a different form for use when the reputed father failed to show up in court.

The procedings were not intended to support the child, but to reimbuse the Parish for the money they had laid out to support the mother and child. The sums involved were:
Court costs      paid by the father
Confinement costs   paid by the father
Child support      so much per week, paid by both father and mother (often equally)

Don't forget that the LRO are still closed, but should be open later this month.

Hi Andrew

Have you by any chance found Betsy/Elizabeth Dunbavin in the 1841/1851 census?

I also see that many online tree's have her death as 1854 Liverpool, but according to the Liverpool records the Betsy Dunbavin who died in liverpool  was only 3 years old.

Betsy Dunbavin born abt 1851
Age    3
Burial Date 6 Sep 1854
Parish Liverpool St Michael

I wonder if she married after Ann's birth ?

1839 marriage Elizabeth Dunbevand Liverpool vol 20 Pg 2-5.........no grooms listed as middle number on the page is missing on the original image

there is a poss in  1840 Elizabeth Dumbabin ( thats how it appears on Free BMD ) Liverpool    20   161
but just checked thats not her she married
Walter James Squire
and parents were
Groom's Father: Walter Squire, Master Mariner
 Bride's Father: Buckel Dunbabbin, Tobacconist

1853 Elizabeth Dunbabin married Samuel Clarke father Joseph Dunbabin
1854 Elizabeth Dunbabin married John Henry Wyke her father Daniel Dunbabin

I will look into the 1839 marriage and see what comes up ...If thats her it could explain her absence in the 1841 /1851 under Dunbavin

Kind regards Judi

Ps Thanks for the heads up re the Lancashire records office being shut ...........would have been a long trek from Oxford to find it closed.

She could then be with her husband on the census in a new name.

Just to keep up to date with this research

The 1839 liverpool marriage is NOT our Elizabeth Dunbevin

the 1839 marriage of Elizabeth Dunbevand  was to Thomas Clarkson

Parents were

Father's name    Hugh Yates...........................so she was Elizabeth Yates born  ie 2nd Marriage

Spouse Father's Thomas Clarkson

Back to the drawing board :(

Have not found Elizabeth/Betsey in censuses yet, but I still think that Ann Blain sighting is our lass in 1851. I have not found a birth to match the Betsey dying in 1854, but I know other children whose births were not registered.

What do you reckon of the following baptism at Hale?
11 Oct 1858 born 27 July 1858 Elizabeth, daughter of Anne Dunbabin, Speke, Single Woman

Might it be the next generation? I think the birth was registered as Elizabeth Bobbin, which would widen our search.

Just had another trawl through my data. In 1861 there's an Elizabeth Dunbavin, 2, born Speke. She is with grandparents John & Elizabeth LOWE. By 1871 the address is shown as Oglet, and Elizabeth Lowe is widowed. She is about the right age to be our Betsey.

Elizabeth Dunbavin married John Burgess 17 Jun 1878, and claimed that her father was John Dunbavin, a labourer, but I have no other references to her.

I think I was wrong in writing off the John Thomas Lowe marriage. The occupation matches too.

I'll need to sit down tomorrow and sort the family out again!
