Leinster Regiment, Swindon
« on: Tuesday 27 September 11 16:45 BST (UK) »
I am looking for information regarding The Leinter Regiment in Swindon during World War 1.  In particular I would like to know if a hospital was attached to the Depot and if so what sort of illness's would have been catered for.

Have you got a more exact date or battalion details?  There were 7 battalions of the Leinster Regiment in WW1, some passed through England for training and  to/from France or the Dardanelles.  3rd Bn (Reserve), 4th and 5th Bns (Extra Reserve) seem to have stayed in England before returning to Ireland.  The others may have passed through Swindon, but Brig. James's book on  British Regiments does not mention it as a base.
Others may know more (usually do!)

If they were at Swindon then it would most likely have been at Chiseldon camp. There was a hospital.

Did you ever find the answer to this? My 2nd great grandfather of the Leinster battalion met and married his wife in Swindon. Curious as to how this came about with him being born in Manchester.
Many thanks
