There is not going to be a cut and dried answer to who Elizabeth Thody was!

This Thody branch arrived in Blunham from Cardington probably in the 1720s, with Richard Thody baptised 24 Feb 1697 at Cardington. His wife was Elizabeth, but I can't find their marriage. Richard was buried at Blunham on 16 Feb 1751 and Elizabeth on 13 Feb 1750. They had three unbaptised sons:

- John who married Mary Peacock in Blunham on 8 May 1750. Their children were not baptised in the established church.
- Richard who married Elizabeth Gray in Blunham on 16 Apr 1759, and who died in 1783
- Anthony, who married in Clophill in 1767 and who subsequently lived in Langford

I doubt if Elizabeth Thody was the daughter of Richard senior as his wife was probably past child bearing age by 1750 when she died.

Which leaves just John and Mary who married in Blunham in 1750. But it comes down to the balance of probabilities in the absence of any baptisms.

It would be interesting to see who the witnesses to Elizabeth's marriage to Daniel Norman were

Hi David

:-[ :-[ oops re Elizabeth Thody of Cardington..... good job I only pencilled her in  ;D  thanks for that.

I have  just started on the Norman family and Elizabeth (wife of Dan snr)Thody was/is the only Thody thus far.

The burial you  found for Dan Norman in 1838 age 88 ties in well with the baptism of a Daniel Norman  10 Nov 1751 Gamlingay, Cambs........mmm not baptists......maybe converted after marrying Eliz Thody  :-[

Not come across Mark Norman as yet, still early days though.

John - could I be cheeky and ask if you could check to see if there's a marriage on 21 Jul 1782 at Blunham of John Thody and Elizabeth Wells (IGI member submission). Other member submissions put the place as Sandy on 9 Aug 1782 and I wonder if the Blunham entry might be the banns

Thanks

David

Morning cheeky;

There isn't a Blunham marriage entry, but there is an entry in the Banns dated 21 Jul 1782 of John Thodey to Eliz Wells of Sandy This date is the last of the 3 dates of publication of the Banns - which is usually prior to the actual marriage date.

Note there is a marriage on 28 Jan 1783 of Charles Wells of Sandy to Hannah Tarry by licence.

cheers John   (going to be another warm & sunny day here today)

Thanks very much John, it confirms what I suspected. This John Thody, unbaptised, but known to be the son of John and Mary from the will of his great uncle, is, I believe, brother of Elizabeth Thody who married Daniel Norman. Without the will I don't think I'd have been able to put together these Thodys, as both the Langford and Blunham branches were non-conformists.

Hot here too - well in the 30s. Have to wear a hat! Sally says hello - had a drink with her last night in the Celt. JP is there at the moment watching the Ireland - Italy match, and filling himself up with a large Irish breakfast which they're arranging. Might chuck a few boules this afternoon if it's not too hot.

Have a good one

David

PS Why have you got the Blunham transcript? Didn't know you were connected to that village

Hi Myfi

I have an Elizabeth Norman who married my 4xg great-uncle, Thomas Musick, in Blunham on 26 Oct 1797. Member submissions (not to be relied on) show her as the daughter of Daniel and Elizabeth, born 1775/6. She was buried on 1 Jul 1804 at Blunham.

So we must be ever-so-distantly connected, if only by marriage!

Someone donated a photocopy of it to the Beds FHS & I just did not have room for it in the library, anyway we have the original transcript, so it was duplicate, I gave it a good home.

No, the baptism of Elizabeth Norman c 1775/76 is not recorded.

Hi Myfi

Thanks for reminding me to look at the new LDs site, which I hate so tend to avoid like the plague!

Your daughter obviously made a wise choice in picking a mate with Bedfordshire blood in him.
