Arkleton Shiels
« on: Saturday 01 October 11 10:20 BST (UK) »
Please can anyone tell me the exact location of Arkleton Shiels.

If it is on a map that would be great.

Also if some one died there in 1780 which cemetery would they be likely buried in?

Thank you.

Hi Judy  (what a good name you have :)  )

I found this article:

http://www.eladvertiser.co.uk/opinion/wanderer/lost-priest-now-safe-at-e-l-office-1.217174?referrerPath=opinion/wanderer

so I traced the Tarras Water up and found Arkleton. Close by there is Auldshiels. Here's a map which you can zoom in and out of

Hi Gnu,

Thank you for the reply with the web pages.

So do you think that Auldshiels is the same ars Arkletonshiels?

When I was up there earlier this year I saw Arkleton but then could't find anywhere that may be Arkletonshiels.

Mind you it is a vast area with very few farms.

My ancestor John Jackson, a Shepherd & his wife Margaret (nee Tait) died there in  1780 & 1794 respectively. Someone posted a photo of their Memorial Stone on this site and I thought it would be in the Ewes Church Yard. However when I looked I could not find it. So wondering if there is any other Church yard nearby where it could be. Have asked them which church yard the Memorial Stone is in but received no reply.

Reading the article that I referred to more carefully , I think the author talks of Arkleton Shiels Cottage as being close to GreyBanno Bridge. The Greybanno is a small burn wihich is just to the North of Arkleton Cottage, so maybe that is it.

Definitely Ewes.  Have you checked with D&G FHS for MIs - they are very helpful

Yes, can see that on the map. Thank you again.

Yes, I thought it was Ewes but just could not find the Head Stone in the lovely little church yard there. I had other people searching too.

Good idea about the D&G Family History Society.

Any other ideas gratefully recieved.

Have you tried the Nat Lib Scotland online historical maps-

http://maps.nls.uk/os/index.html

The 6 ins OS is pretty good but you may have to go for an older one.

I'll have a look there too.
