"The Bend" in or near Seaford
« on: Sunday 02 October 11 22:05 BST (UK) »
I recently came across a letter written by my mother to my father during WWII.  At the top of the first page it says The Bend.  My mother often mentioned that she lived at The Bend for a number of years during the war.

Since I know she lived in or near Seaford, I'm assuming that "The Bend" was - and perhaps still is - the name of a house.  Can anyone help me determine its location?

One more clue that may possibly help.....

I found my mother's National Registration Identity Card.  On it, her "full postal address" is given as The Bend, Eastbourne Road, Seaford, Sussex.  This would seem to corroborate my belief that The Bend was the name of a house.

There is a flourishing museum in Seaford.  They may be able to help and the library may have old directories too.  Lewes Record Office certainly will.

Eastbourne Road is the A259 that runs from Seaford to the River Cuckmere and then to Eastbourne.

Andrea, thanks for the suggestions.  Quick question - is the Lewes Record Office the same as the East Sussex Record Office?  I'm in the US so am not familiar with a lot of things that are obvious to researchers in England.

Yes.  East Sussex record office is in Lewes, which is the county town.

The Electoral Rolls for that period should give you the exact location of the house in question. I am not sure whether these are available for the war years however. It might be better to see what they show for the years just before and after WW2.
