Margaret Hannah Riches born 1857 Norfolk
« on: Monday 03 October 11 08:49 BST (UK) »
If anyone has information relating to the abovementioned person, particularly marriage details, I would be grateful.

I am currently researching her husband's (John Woods) line trying to identify who his parents were.

Thanks both for the information....very useful.

I have managed to obtain the Woods / Riches marriage date as September 1881 but as yet not got the wedding certificate.......

I was hoping to get a confirmation of John Woods' father before I started getting the certs, just in case I had got the wrong John Woods!!

Searches on the three main names in my family are a bit of a pain......Woods, Howe, Enfield.......

Search Woods on Google and I'll get a timber merchant or something...

Howe gives me 'How do I clean my carburettor?'

and Enfield is a town near Ponders End!!!!

Thanks again, AL.

The most reliable source for John Woods's father will be the marriage cert - you KNOW that will be the right John Woods, as you know the right one married MArgaret.
Looking for random John Woods in earlier censuses (and it isnt exactly a rare name) may produce some possibles, but how will you know which if any are the right one?

After the marriage, have you got MArgaret and John on the censuses, that will at least give you an approx year and place of birth for him, which might suggest some possibles from earlier censuses.

The ones in bold red above are the correct ones.....The problem with John Woods is that he may be Lewis John Woods or John Money Greenacre Woods (I think he may be the former)......or just just plain old John Woods.

If he is L J Woods, then I believe his father is also a John Woods.....I guess it's a case of speculate and get some marriage certs.

Thanks again, AL.

Are you not sure of that marriage then?

If you are sure, then as I said before, getting the cert will be better than specualting! Saves money and time in thelong run to ensure you are on the right line.

If you are not sure, then start with a child's birth cert to get a maiden name for Margaret. If it is Riches, then you are on the right track.
If not, then dont waste your money on that marriage cert!

WHere do the other possible names for John come from?

(PS Johns occupation in 1891 is commercial porter, not printer - my mistake!  Looking at 1881 just before the marriage there is one John Woods who is a cab driver  which might be him, with widowed mother. But best to get his marriage cert, find his father and work back one step at a time)

The 1861 Census gives a Lewis John Woods born 1860 Heigham, so you can see why I think the 'Lewis' may have been dropped. Father given as John R Woods and Mother Sophia.

I hope the marriage certificate of John and Margaret does actually give John's father's name, given that it appears he was dead by the time of the marriage........

I have just had a rather lot of fun (joke) with another bit of research where a son has given his deceased father's name which we know to be completely incorrect.

Thanks AL
