Burial look up
« on: Tuesday 04 October 11 14:11 BST (UK) »
Good afternoon all

I'm trying to find the whereabouts of the grave of my gt grandfather Jarvis Jagger.  He died circa the Sept quarter of 1865 in Halifax.  He's not at Stoney Royd in Halifax.

He was living at White Gate Terrace in Southowram, Halifax with his wife Mary and daughter Hannah (b Halifax 1858) and possibly Benjamin (b, Bradford 1851)

His name as been variously transcribed as Jervis Jagger, Jervis Jaggar, Garves Jagger, Gerves Jaggar.....

He was born circa 1821 in Clayton, Bradford.

Any help most appreciated
Regards
Jan  :)

Jan,
You almost certainly have this by now: Jervis Jagger buried 30 July 1865 at Clayton Heights NC chapel. His residence is given as Shaw Hill, but the death announcement in the Halifax Guardian of 5 August 1865 says he was a table cloth weaver of Whitegate Terrace Southowram (an address I know you recognise). Death 26th July.
Have you made progress identifying Hannah?

Hey Maggie, how's it going?!

With the Halifax & Guardian Courier BMD Announcements being searchable now I do indeed have the details of Jervis Jagger's death but I DIDN'T have his burial details.  WHERE did you get them from?  I'm curious why he would have been buried there as a) they lived at Southowram, (perhaps there wasn't a NC burial ground near, b) I think Stoney Royd opened circa 1861 and c) Northowram was nearer and I'm sure that had/has an NC chapel.

I'm 99.9% sure my Hannah because:

  • her birth certificate states she was born at Whitegate Terrace
  • Unfortunately the 1861 Census is missing but the she is there with her mother and brother in 1871
  • It's where Jervis was living when in died in 1865.
Many thanks for your message, I shall investigate further but I suspect there won't be anything to see.

Hi Jan,
I found his burial on the Ancestry site, under the West Yorkshire Non-Conformist Records. I wasn't really looking for him - I'd order a copy of the deaths page from the Halifax Guardian records at the library, and he was on the same page as two of my Jaggers (sheer coincidence!) Hallo, I thought, I know that name and address: is there anything more about him?
I have no idea whether the burial ground still exists, so many have been destroyed now. I hope you find out. Did you ever find his birth record? I had zero luck with that.
I have found so much about my own Jaggers I now don't know what to do with it. I've got several new cousins, too! I only need to find the one who made a fortune in the American Civil War now .... and whose name I don't know .... and I can retire happily to another family line.
Cheers
Maggie

Hi Maggie

I trust this message finds you well!

With regard to the Jagger's, do you have a Henry Jagger anywhere in your tree and possibly marrying a Harriet Whiteley in the March quarter of 1878 in the Halifax Registration District?

With regard to Cockroft's, and I can't remember if we've corresponded on this before, but do you have a Hannah Cockroft born circa 1832 but not sure where.  Baptised at Ebenezer Primitive Methodist, Halifax on 11/11/1832.

Thanks
Jan

Hi Jan,

No, no Hannah Cockroft around that date, I'm afraid. I've only got one b 1855. It's one of those really common names in the area, isn't it? My umpteeth GGM Sarah or Sally Cockcroft came from Heptonstall where there were lots, but I don't know if that's of any use to you.

love
Maggie

Hi Maggie

I haven't found any connection to Heptonstall yet so it's all a bit vague.

Thanks for replying though.
