Hopkinson of Derby
« on: Tuesday 04 October 11 16:15 BST (UK) »
I am searching for the parents of William Hopkinson reportedly from Brackenfield c 1800. He married Maria Harrison in St Peters Derby in 1828. Among the witnesses were William Hopkin and another Hopkinson signature that is not easy to read. On the 1841 census William is an ag lab and in 1851 a brewer in Liversage Street Derby. There are many choices of Williams  born around 1800. Please can some one help me find the right one . Thank you
(I have just posted the same message on the begginers board before I found this Derby link, please forgive me- this is my 1st time !)

Hi Beechtree

I have checked my records and your William doesn't appear in my tree.

I have a note of a baptism for a William 8 April 1798 to William & Ann of Morton.  Brackenfield is in the parish of Morton.   Do you have his age at death and does it fit?

Hi Carol
Thanks for your reply. The 1798 Morton entry was one of my choices. Wllm was 52 when he died, making his birth 1800 but ages are never very specific. But I needed to eliminate the other possibilities before settling for a date that was 2 years out!
Brackenfield didn't have a church to register baptisms at that time so Wllm could easily have been baptised in any of the following places (although Morton should have been the one)
5 May 1799 Ashover  to                  Wllm and Elizabeth
4 May 1799  St Peter's Derby to     Wllm and Elizabeth
7 Aug 1799 Shirland to                   Wllm and Mary
18 May 1800 North Wingfield to       Wllm and Jane

The difficult signature on the wedding entry for Wllm in 1828 could have been JANE Hopkinson. But when I went to Derby RO  her sig on other documents was different .(However there was a considerable time lapse between them )
I was hoping that other Roots Chat members would be able to eliminate some of my choices so that I could settle for the correct one!! I really want to know what happened to the 1800  North Wingfield William.
I found difficulty tracing Wllm and Ann of Morton on the 1841 Census
                      Regards

Hi again

A little more information that may help.

William Hopkinson was buried 21 July 1829 at Morton aged 63. Administration papers state he was a labourer of Morton and a widower.
also mentioned was his son Samuel, farmer of Brackenfield, Thomas Hadfield of Shirland & John Doe, Gentleman.

The baptism entry for William to William & Jane gives their abode as Pilsley.

The entry for William to William & Elizabeth gives abode as Prass, Ashover.

There is also this entry in the North Wingfield records -
William baptised 22.8. 1800 to Thomas & Mary abode Clay Cross

I believe that Robert Hopkinson born to  Robert & Mary Hopkinson in North Wingfield in 1740 might be my ancestor who moved to Lambeth & became a Lighterman.  Does anyone know about this Derbyshire family>

Hi Somerville66

I have his baptism as 13.1. 1741 abode Woodthorpe, North Wingfield.  His parents I believe were Robert & Mary (nee Kittchen) who married in 1726.

There are two Robert's buried in Northwingfield with the abode Woodthorpe. One in 1758 and the other in 1767.  There are no ages given so I can't say if one of them is the 1741 Robert.

What makes you think he moved to Lambeth?
