Wellington WOOD
« on: Thursday 06 October 11 11:26 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find birth details and parents of Joseph Wood of Fore St Wellington Somerset b. Circa 1804. I know he became a Tailor and Married at Merthyr Tydfil Glamorgan Aug 27 1833. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I do not know where his baptism was of course he could be non conformist.

Thank You

Brian

Hi Brian,

I had a look at FreeReg for Joseph WOOD.
Three enties came up for Somerset between 1800 & 1804
Two were in towns about 50 miles away from Wellington
There was one in 1801 { I think } at Wivelscombe.

Later on I got to thinking that Wivelscombe was actually pretty close to Wellington.
When I checked it out it is approx 5 to 6 miles away from Wellington.
I went back to FreeReg to get the detail and now it tells me there are no Joseph Woods bap 1800-1804.
What is going on I have no idea, but if you want to check it occassionaly you might get lucky.

Cheers
Geoff

Hi Geoff,
Thanks for your interest, after reading your reply I checked on the IGI and found a Joseph Wood christened 1801 Wiveliscombe would that be close ? also did he not be truthful with his age later on in life though he went through all the Census dates as 1804.
They had a son born in the same parish as their marriage and is buried there aged 3yrs. So everything else seems to add up.

Hello Brian

I was wondering how do you know Joseph Wood was from Fore St in Wellington assuming he was in Wales during all the census returns?  Interested because my grandfather had a hairdressing shop in Fore St being one of the main trading streets in the town.

Hi Somersetlass,
My Uncle was doing all this before me he had the details which now sadly have gone all his papers were destroyed after his passing.
He at some point went to Wellington and got the info, but could go no further due to ill health. The 1851 Census says he was a master tailor born in Wellington. Though in 1833 he was in Wales.

Hello Brian

Such a shame your uncle's research papers were destroyed.  I wonder where he went in Wellington and found his info?  I'm local to the area so possibly could help?

Your IGI/FreeReg search would have included any non conformist baptisms in Wellington as well however I know some on-line records only start from 1813 so Joseph could still be out there somewhere.  Not sure about the Wiveliscombe Joseph being yours though.  Do you know the names of any possible siblings he might have had?

There are 43 people with the surname Wood living in Wellington in the 1841 Census so there is a good chance some of them are your ancestors.  Two are recorded living in Fore St: Davied (61) a tailor with Ann (62).  Are these his parents I wonder?  Where was Joseph in the 1841 Census and did he follow in his father's footsteps to become a tailor too?

Hi Steph,

In 1841 it says  Joseph Wood 30  b1811 head
                          Ann Wood     20  b1821 wife
                          Mary Wood    2   b1839
at Long Row Merthyr Tydfil

In 1851 it says  Joseph Wood 47 b1804 Master Tailor Empl 1 Man
                                                                Wellington Somerset
                           Ann Wood     25 b1816 wife
                                                                 Leswen Brecknockshire
Mary Wood    12 b1839 nurse at home
                                                                 Glamorganshire
                           William Wood 5 b1846  Scholar
                                                                Merthyr Tydvil
                          James Wood   1 b1850  juvenile
                                                                Merthyr Tydvil
They had a son Thomas Wood in 1836 born at Merthyr Tydfil but sadly by Oct 1839 he was buried in the Parish Church they got married at in 1833.
