Carversland?
« on: Friday 07 October 11 09:38 BST (UK) »
Mary Ann Elliott was born in 1817 in Carversland, Yorkshire. She married on 4 Jun 1838 to Joseph Horton at St Peter, Wolverhampton.

On the 1851 census they lived in Wedge Mills, Staffordshire:

- Joseph Horton, 37, b.Cheslyn Hay, Staffs, Black smith
- Maryann Horton, 34, b.Carversland, Yorkshire
- Emma Horton, 11
- John Horton, 9
- Mary Ann Horton, 6
- Joseph Horton, 4
- Fanny Horton, 6 MO

But where in Yorkshire is Carversland? I have an image from the census, but can't seem to attach it here.

Maybe it's Calverlands, Leeds?

Do you think it could be Calverley, Leeds?

The 'flourish' on the end of the name is from the letter 'Y' on the line above. A person in Cannock wouldn't be familiar with place names in Yorkshire and wrote down what he heard without knowing the spelling.

I had a quick look at West Riding and Calverley births but couldn't spot any entries for Mary Ann Elliott.

The Calverley PR's are in front of me, only Elliott family around that time were from Apperley Bridge.
Nothing found on your Mary Ann from 1815 - 1818. (just to be on the safe side)
