Hughes/Mathews in Llysfaen or Ruthin
« on: Saturday 08 October 11 12:08 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for information about Thomas Hughes esq who was married to Elizabeth Mathews or Matthews of Plas yn Llysfaen (daughter of John Mathews or Matthews of Newmarket and Plas yn Llysfaen, married April 1813, children Robert Henry Matthews Hughes, Dora Elizabeth Hughes, possibly Spier Hughes). My understanding is that Thomas was a gentleman of Ruthin. I'm virtually certain he is the brother of my gggf (John Hughes, 1789-1845, rector of Cilcain & Nannerch), as I have a letter from Elizabeth to one of her children, ancestor of a distant cousin of mine. Can't find anything definite about him, though - lots of Thomas and John Hugheses in Ruthin, but none of them fit so far...

Hello trimochyn,

Have you considered a search of the Welsh Wills online database on the National Library of Wales site?

I entered a search for Thomas Hughes 1820-1858 (the latest available) and it produced 108 hits. It might be worthwhile examining these, or doing another search on him. It would be very likely that he left a Will if he was of the status of Gentleman.

If the surgeon is the right man there is a will dated 1820 which might explain why he is difficult to find.

Again,if Ihave the right Spier Hughes his promotions in the Military can be seen in the London Gazette
Ensign to Lt 1842
Captain to Major 1858
This is also the year he marries Mary Anne Lermitte
He dies at The Curragh Ireland in 1863 as Major Spier Matthews Hughes
Some family connections appear in the Family Search Community Trees section and there are references to nobility
I'll stop there in case I've got the wrong family!

Elizabeth Matthews' baptism is to be found in the Newmarket PRs, along with several other references to the Matthewa family.

Do you have this information?
Savage, Hoskins, Wigley, Edwards, German, Jacks

Roger,

You do have the right family - Spier is mentioned in a couple of letters I have. Didn't know he was military, though, so that is very interesting and makes sense in the context of a letter written by my gggf worrying about a family member being involved in, I suspect, the Crimea (where his brother was a surgeon, incidentally).

The names you've found shows that Robert Henry Matthews Hughes is definitely Robert (Vaughan) Hughes' cousin, so Thomas Hughes was his uncle.

taidgazacaz, thanks and I've applied for a readers' ticket to look for those records.

Big progress and many, many thanks for all the help!

In the 1851 census there is an Elizabeth M Hughes great niece aged 3,born 1848 birthplace unspecified.
In the FamilySearch.org IGI index there is a record for Elizabeth Matthews Hughes born Tamil Nadu,India 1847 to "Spier Hughes" and "Janet"
I think the 84th  foot went to India in 1845 so this could well be her,but no furtrher data on "Janet"
