I think Michael means the family line
The first son will be named after one of his grandfathers or his father
and the first daughter after her grandmother or her mother

I find this in my family
Elizabeth

my name comes down the family from my grt grt grandmother on my mothers side
Elizabeth Stark nee Pringle

Hi

I think this was Michael's post:

http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,456323.msg3175785.html#msg3175785

In it, I assume he's asking because many families, as Elizabeth has suggested, used what is often called the traditional naming system in Scotland but occurred in other parts of the UK, whereby children were named in this order:

First son named after the father's father
Second son named after mother's father
Third son after the father
Other son's after other male relatives

First daughter after mother's mother
Second daughter named after father's mother
Third daughter named after mother
etc.

Michael probably asked  what the subject called his first son and second daughter  hoping to find out who the person's parents' names were likely to be.

This naming patern was only a guide and I've come across many examples where it wasn't used.
