Unregistered birth
« on: Sunday 09 October 11 07:56 BST (UK) »
How do you find evidence of someone's birth if you believe it has not been registered and you cannot find a baptism either.

Need to tie a birth to two people to place a vital piece of a jigsaw.

How do you prove a child was born to two parents if you have no official documents and no evidence?

You can't with 100% certainty.

What time frame are we in for this ?

1845! My gt grandfather claims he was born in Lea Bridge in 1845 - no evidence can be found.

It requires a lot of hard work, sometimes over several years, and sometimes you don't succeed. One way is to find someone else who claims to be related to the person and then find that relative's parents/grandparents. I've been able do this several times, where a person registering a death said he was a brother or cousin. I've also found a traceable relative staying with an ancestor's brother in a census which led to evidence of parentage. I've found similar help from wills. Also looking in cemetery registers where a relationship to traceable people in the same grave. Certainly in Scotland both parents' names are given on marriage and death certificates, you'll know better about certificates in England.

Graham.

On his marriage certificate I have his father's name and occupation and have found him and his bride. On no census before 1871 can I tie anyone in as being him. His father is alone and declaring himself to be a widower and his mother has run off to America and marries someone else!!

I just cannot find him on 1851 or 1861 census.

Thanks for your suggestions

I have tried to get info before through rootschat using his name with no luck. It was really only a general enquiry. But here goes -

Edward John Knight supposed son of Edward Knight and Charlotte Da Silva Povoas.

Edward senior son of John Knight born in Rochester 1818
Charlotte Da Silva Povoas daughter of Antonio Da Silva Povoas and Charlotte Bishop born in 1818

Edward John aka John Edward supposedly born in Lea Bridge in 1845 marries Caroline Stephens born in Chew Magna Somerset in August 1869 in East End
