Street in Cannes, France, 1887.
« on: Monday 10 October 11 19:12 BST (UK) »
Hi

I'm looking for the following street, which existed in Cannes, in 1887.   It was the site of the Villa Flora, a "Scottish style" castle, demolished about 30 years ago.

Route de Erase (transcription errors possible).

Thanks.

It may now be the Avenue Docteur Raymond Picaud, previously known as "route de Fréjus"

(the bottom paragraph lists notable buildings on this street, including Villa Flora)

According to this French website the address was Amiral-Wester-Wemys (avenue) 3,

Just checked Google maps - Avenue Amiral-Wester-Wemys and Avenue Docteur Raymond Picaud intersect.
GRAY - Inveresk; Lanarkshire
LINDSAY - Lanarkshire
PURDIE - Lanarkshire; W. Lothian
POZZI - Elgin; Lancashire
MACKENZIE, MORISON - Stornoway
ARCHIBALD, HAY, HUNTER, SNADDON - Clackmannanshire
COXON, HALL, JACKSON, SHOTTON - Northumberland

Thanks, everyone.

It would be good if the last theory were correct, as my great-aunt (who worked as a lady's maid in the Villa Flora) had the middle name Wemyss.

According to the site I posted earlier the wall with a name plaque for the villa still survives- perhaps a look at the area on Google Streetview would show this?

If you look at the wedge of land directly between
Avenue de l'Amiral-Wester-Wemyss
and
Avenue Docteur Raymond Picaud (previously route de Fréjus)

It does appear to be an apartment complex set in some gardens, and along Avenue Docteur Raymond Picaud there is an oldish looking wall that fits the description from aghadowey's link.  Opposite where Av. de la Plage intersects Avenue Docteur Raymond Picaud, there is what I think was an original gate/entrance for Villa Flora, now somewhat worse for wear. The name plaque to the right of it is a bit hard to see (google has blurred it out from one view), and I couldn't work out how to link directly into Streetview, so I've clipped a bit of the image out from the best angle I could get.

Thank you, jorose.

The block of apartments is a poor replacement for the "Scottish" castle.
