Royal Dublin Fusiliers
« on: Thursday 13 October 11 09:14 BST (UK) »
Hi
I was wondering if someone could help me find some information regarding my great uncle who was a soldier in the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. His name was

John Nolan - D.O.B 2/12/1894
Father's name : Patrick Nolan
Mother : Sarah Kavanagh Nolan Craig
discharged from army : 18/6/1918
wounded gun shot wound to left wrist , left index finger missing
army service duration was 2 years and 21 days so that would mean he joined in 1916
Died : 23/7/1959

I don't have his army service number. I would appreciate it if anyone would be able to tell me anything about his time in the Dublin Fusiliers and where he was wounded.
Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Hi

Can you tell us, where he was born, and where he may of been living immediately prior to joining up?

Cheers

do you have a document with this information? any medals in the family (they should have his service number on them)? He should have at least the British War Medal and Victory Medal.

If he enlisted in 1916, he's likely to have a 26000 series number. If discharged as a result of wounds, he's likely to have had a Silver War Badge awarded too.

26256 John Nolan, RDF would appear to fit the bill (if the above assumptions are correct)

A John Nolan who appears to have enlisted in 1916 is no 26409  who was from Dalkey, born 1883. Discharged 1919. Caught up in the Easter Rising whilst on leave.

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me in my search.
The information that I have on my great Uncle was from information I found on his file when he worked in Guinnesses. John Nolan 26256 sounds more like him because his family are all from a round The Coombe and the Liberties in Dublin. His file from Guinnesses suggest that he was either with the 1st Bat or maybe the 10th Bat. I can't make it out because in both areas it is mentioned  the ink seems to have smudged. If this John Nolan 26256 is my gr uncle how would I go about getting his file, do you know?
On the site  http://irishmedals.org/gpage16.html I found a John Nolan working in Guinesses Cook’s Lane Maltings which states that he was a Guardsman 2nd Irish Guards but again I don't know if that is my John Nolan because as I said the hand written file from Guinnesses achives definitely looks more like a 1 or maybe 10th bat,.
Thank you again for your help. i really appreciate it.

mt Gt Grandfather, Joseph Niland, was a Guinness worker. Joined the Royal Engineers in 1915 and didn't come back.

I have a copy of the Guinness Roll of Employees who served in WW1. Only 1 John Nolan listed who as you say is Irish Guards; there is an Arthur Nolan who is RDF. Any chance he's a relative?

No online record for John Nolan, RDF but if your John Nolan was Irish Guards then his records could be sent off for as Guards records were kept separate from the rest.

Only 2 John Nolan Irish Guards medal card indexes that I can see. One was in 1914 and discharged 1917 leaving the other, 2735, who has British War Medal and Victory Medal plus a Silver War Badge entry.

Is there any chance of uploading an electronic copy of the document you have?

Hi,
what I have is not so much a document as such.. The reference to the Dublin Fusiliers are little notes that have been added to his application form for his job in Guinness. I don't have a scanner so I have taken some photos of the area on the forms which mention his army service.

the Guinness archives says he joined Guinness in 1933 so the Irish Guardsman isn't likely to be your man.

this is more likely the Irish Guardsman (though he seems to have left before the outbreak of war)

Hi again ,
I've been trying to add the photos I took of the pieces on the application form but the file is too big . I will try to work on making a smaller file.
So do you think that John Nolan 26256 sounds more like my John Nolan.?
