Robert Lindsay died Singapore abt. 1847
« on: Thursday 13 October 11 16:58 BST (UK) »
Robert was born 20 May 1816 in Largo, Fife, Scotland. His parents were David Lindsay & Euphemia Hay.
I found a grave stone in Largo cemetery that said Robert Lindsay Robert died in Singapore age 32. What was he doing in Singapore? Can anyone help or can anyone let me know how I find out?
I've looked in all the records I can think of on line & I don't know where to try next.
I have the following information, but unfortunately didn't record where I got it from. However, this doesn't explain how Robert got to Singapore or how & in what circumstances he died.
There was a lot of cholera & endemic smallpox in Singapore before 1847 because people were suspicious of the vaccine. Seamen who were infected were put in the hospital with sick Chinese & Convicts where the disease spread. By 1847-1848 the number of smallpox cases had reduced considerably & a Seaman's hospital had been built in which there were 12 patients. It was believed that they caught the disease before they arrived at Singapore.
Any help will be gratefully received. :)
