Death certificate details
« on: Saturday 15 October 11 14:45 BST (UK) »
I have two brick walls regarding birth places for 1829-1899 and 1892-1964  I know where and when they both died and was wondering if the death certificates would reveal the places of birth.  The 1829 , i know was born in Loughborough but nothing else.  No siblins or parents known for both. ???  I realise the two dates will show different recordings.   Please can anyone help ? ??? ???

Death Certificates at that time do not show the place of birth.  See the death certificate help sheet at http://www.rootschat.com/links/09hh/

The best way to find out where people were born back then is to follow them backwards through the censuses.Marriage certs should show their fathers names. So that's a clue as to pinning them down, sometimes you will be lucky enough to get a sibling as a witness too.

Even after 1969 when they started to include place and date of birth, the info is only as good as the informants knowledge of the deceased person.

If you want more help then let us have the names, dates etc, probably on the appropriate county boards.Give us all you know about them so we don't waste time looking up what you already know.

Hi Carol

The reason i ask the question about the death certs is because i have just about exhausted every possible clue.  Edith matilda bailey born 1892 and died 1964 Oakham rutland, does not show up on any birth searches or census records.  Her father George William Bailey, named on marriage certificate 1916 oakham but can find no further clues regarding him.  Witnesses no use.  Even her grandaughter is mystified.   The other relative Joseph orridge,  b1829 loughborough and died Melton mowbray 1899 lived most of his life in Scalford Leicestershire..  all censuses show no siblins and have checked witnesses.  And so the death certificate

Even if the d.c. did show where born, bear in mind that this may or may not be correct, depending on who gave the information.
Also, it may not give the actual place, only the county / country.

Thanks  Billyblue,

I was hoping the death cert would be my last hope for Joseph.  In the 1841 census for Scalford leicestershire, he would be about 14 years.  Working as a brickmaker.  Perhaps he was from a workhouse ?  Don't want to give up on him but think i have no choice.

thanks again Julie

I'm gueesing you've checked out the Edith that appears in the 1901 census as daughter of William (perhaps he used William, but was actually George William)? She appears to be Edith E and there is an Edith Elizabeth born in Oakham Apr Qtr 1892 (perhaps Matilda was a later addition, have had that myself).

By the late 19th century most births were registered.  If you can't find one I'm guessing its because the child was registered with a different name.
