Philip and Annette Soorn
« on: Saturday 15 October 11 20:03 BST (UK) »
Annette Soorn and her four children show up in the Isle of Man in 1901 census.

(RG13/5305 f21 p21)

Their address was 13 Fort William, Braddan.

Would this have been a holiday address or were they living there?

I believe that eldest daughter Gertrude married  Jack Connibear and they lived Isle of Man, but I don't know whether the whole family moved there.

If you find the family in there in 1911 census it may give a better indication of where they were living.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Using the free 1911 search, the family are back in Manchester then.

I see that Annette's husband isn't with her in 1901, he is still in England.

in 1904 accomodation guide nos 11 and 15 Fort William (which is on south side of Douglas Harbour) were hotels/boarding houses - in 1881 #13 was also a boarding house but is not included in 1898 or 1904 accomodation guides - at that period most of that road was involved with Tourist trade but the census was not taken during the main season so either out of season tourists or staying with friends or a short term let ?

Thank you all for your replies.

It's a bit strange that none of the family in Isle of Man had an occupation.

They are the only ones at number 13 so I don't think they can be staying with friends.

No 'Head' in the household, but that's presumably because Philip was in Manchester.

Thank you groom for that 1901 census entry. I hadn't realised that Philip was boarding with his oldest sister, Victoria.

So perhaps a short term let is the answer.

Thanks

in 1894 13 Fort William was owned by Samuel Richard Newton but occupied by an Alice Perry
in 1881 census Sam newton a birmingham born tailor was at no 5 - possibly renumbered between 1881 +1894 but strangely the 1881/2 directory reports him at #13

That is strange.
Perhaps some houses were empty and it was the fifth occupird house in the census?

I haven't came across Alice Perry before nor Samuel Richard Newton, but if Samuel was born in Birmingham there could be a connection.

I think I might have to look at him to see he was in Birmingham.

Just checked on Familysearch and Samuel is age 49 in 1881 but wife Susan Sheperd Newton 71.

I'm puzzled.
Can that be right? Or is there some mix up with relationship to Head?

Moved to Isle of Man

I've found the burials of Philip and Annette Soorn at Douglas Borough Cemetery on this website.

http://www.iomfhs.im/lawsons/LawsonBMD/Main_Site_index.html?Submit=Lawson+BMD+Home

Philip died April 1934 and Annette in March 1939.

So they did move to Isle of Man. The question is when?

I have found an address for Philip Soorn in St Anne's on Sea in Mar 1924.

So it looks as though they must have moved to the Isle of Man between
1924 and 1934.

Are there any directories which might show when they were living in the Isle of Man.

Thanks
