Old Soldier at Edrom. Adam Sutherland
« on: Monday 17 October 11 10:19 BST (UK) »

Whilst raking around the Kirk Yard at Edrom I found a Soldiers Grave.
It was covered in algae so i gave it a bit of a clean up. He was evidently a local Fella, who was not forgotten by his former comrades.

Erected by fellow ex Service men in memory of
                  Adam H Sutherland
               Who died from War Wounds
                  15th October 1934 age 58
By the begining of WW1 he would have been almost 38 years old.
He may have been a militia man that joined up even although he was older? He may have served in the Boer War, when he would have been in his mid 20's?

Anyone know anything about Adam? Just a matter of interest.

Yes, indeed. I have been reading up on WW1 as part of my genealogy researches. WW1 was a horrible War (None are good) because of its dehumanising nature, the way men volunteered or were plucked to go into the Military, thinking it was going to be over by Xmas and a great adventure not to missed.

The reality: little or short training, poor military tactics and attrition, and wearing down by shear calculated murder on all sides. Those with the most left standing being the winner. They were indeed Heroes ! Lions lead by Donkeys.

Many men returned with Shell Shock, horrific Wounds and disabilities.
It would be interesting to know if Adam Sutherland was looked after by former commrades, or if the Royal British Legion helped him out?

Or indeed what sort of life he had after his return to the Edrom area?

Could the death certs for the 1916 and 1934 deaths be compared for parentage?

EDIT - forget the 1916 - died in WW1
