In 1881 the family (minus George) was living in Watford
Emma Bullin head widow 48 b Gloster
George Bullin 19 b Clapham
Ellen Bullin dau 15 b West London
Elizabeth Bullin dau 12 b West London

If George died in 1875 (in West London?) then they should be in West London in 1871!

George Bullen died in Kensington RD 1875 aged 44 but I do not have the DC, neither do I have an address at death.

Their last born daughter, Elizabeth, was born ca1869 in Fitzroy Square, London (according to the 1911 census) and I have not found her in the 1871 census either so presume the spelling of the surname was scrambled and I haven't worked it out yet.  I do not know which number Fitzroy Square either so it will be a long trawl to check every household!!

By 1881 Emma Bullen, nee Carter, was resident in 12 Weymouth St., Watford, a widow with three of her children.  The family remained in the same street until Emma's death in 1913, her daughter (married name Elizabeth Warrell) and husband  being the householders.

If I could find the family in 1871 it would be so useful but they may simply have escaped the enumerator's pencil!

The Kirtling parish register transcript gives the following baptism:

1830 Oct 17 - BURLING George son of James & Anne otp lab

I wonder if your George is the George Bullen in Paddington in 1871?  He was married but his family were not with him.  He was a coachman (like your George in 1861) but his birthplace was stated to be Paddington.  There doesn't seem to be a match for a George Bullen born in Paddington in 1861 or 1881 so he may be the Kirtling one and just said he was born locally as it was easier than explaining where Kirtling was and spelling it!

Ruth, thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for.

Your reference to the George Bullen at Paddington may well be right.  I had viewed this entry but dismissed it due to the birthplace but have now saved it for further reference.   If I can find wife Emma Bullen with the children somewhere in London/Middlesex/Surrey in 1871, it may confirm your suspicions.

Thank you so much for your input.
regards
Carol
