I think it says 'Shanker of pit'.

ScotlandsPeople give this definition for 'Pit Shanker':
"A person who works in a coal pit or saw pit, especially at sinking, repairing and inspecting shafts"

Yes, I can see "Pit shanker" as the occupation. The term must have become obsolete as I knew very many miners in South yorkshire who had migrated there from Scottish pits, but never heard that term in conversation.
