Newcastle Workhouse - 1906
« on: Wednesday 19 October 11 03:17 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I have just started researching my wife's side of our family tree and we obtained a copy of her Grandmother's birth certificate (Norah ALLAN).

The Birth Certificate is from Newcastle-upon-Tyne and says she was born at 416 Westgate Road, U.D.

Looking at various records, I'm thinking that this address represents the Newcastle Union Workhouse.

The Birth Certificate doesn't list a father but has her mother's name (Dora ALLAN) and her address listed as (Domestic Servant), 90 Headlam Street, Newcastle.

So my questions are ..

Am I correct in that the Westgate Road address does represent the Workhouse?

Does it make sense for Norah's mother to list a different address?  Would she have just gone to the Workhouse to give birth?

Would there be any Workhouse records of this birth and would I likely learn anything new from them?    Would I get any hints about a father?  Norah does list a father (surname = DONALDSON) on her marriage certificate but how do I get proof that he really is her father?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Phil Jones

Yes, sorry I didnt notice that in the subject line.
Both my G. Grandparents died there, but that was in 1931/32.

According to the Workhouse website the address of the Newcastle Workhouse was 218     418 Westgate Road  :-\

However, the birth registers for the Newcastle Union are held by Tyne & Wear Archives - I'll take a quick look for you next time I'm there.

I would really appreciate anything you could find out about Norah or Dora ALLAN.  I'd love to look through the records myself but I don't get back to England very often these days (living in Pittsburgh USA now).

Thanks,

Phil
