William Clarke BROWN - convict or not?
« on: Wednesday 19 October 11 05:49 BST (UK) »
After 2 days of searching I am finally handing over for help from people who are much better at this than me.

Here is what I have on William Clarke Brown (the facts only there are some things I cannot prove on the internet I am not including them here).

William Clarke Brown died in Coleraine Victoria in 1908 aged 87. On his death certificate his parents were were William Brown (farmer) and Martha Brown formally Clarke. He was born in Northampton England and had been in Victoria for 64 years.

He married in 1847 to Margaret Sefton who was from Ireland. I have her arrival details. She came on an assisted passage as an unmarried female..

I think they had approx 16 children (I dont need any details about them thank you) these childrens' births were in Heywood, Balmoral, Hamilton and Cloleraine, Victoria.

I purchased the marriage certificate but there is NO extra on it.

Thank you in advance, cheers Ted

Hi there,

Please help me to help you...  May I have a list of questions you would really really love for some help on, please  ;D
You are not looking for help on the children of William and Martha.

Who was Margaret Sefton,  is her husband and Martha's husband the same chap please ... when did Margaret die?  perhaps that will help find when William and Martha were likely to marry....  Am I mis-understanding and having another senior moment ... could Margaret's Mother in Law be Martha ...

Those Bill Brown's can be so very unreliable in the paper trail they left behind....  ;D

Cheers,  JM

Oh now I am confused.

Did William have 2 wives? - his death certificate only shows 1. Margaret Sefton wife of 24 years. She died in 1915.

Martha Clarke was his mother. Therefore Margaret (Nee Sefton) Browns Mother-in-law.

Does that clear things up - where did you get Martha as William Clarke Brown's wife. I don't have this info (except if it is on the weird tree on Ancestry that also has him living in the USA for a time)

Thanks for your help, cheers Ted

PS Red post - sorry Merlin that is a typo I meant to type there is NO extra on it.

Witnesses were John and Mary Ann Edney of the River Plenty and I am not sure where as that is not filled in at the top of the page, but most of the others on the page are from Melbourne.

Not very helpful is it? I wouldnt have spent my $17.50 if I had been able to see it first.
