NICHOLES family of Cambridge in the 1911 Census, anyone?
« on: Wednesday 19 October 11 17:10 BST (UK) »
Hi again, Everyone,
I don't seem to be having much luck with finding the NICHOLES (sic) family in Cambridge in the 1911 Census.  There ought to be a William Arthur NICHOLES aged 29, born in Cambridge, his wife Mabel Evelyn and possibly a very young daughter called Evelyn.  There may also be Arthur's grandma Mary PAULL, who would be 90+ years old - her death is registered in Cambridge in 1913; she was born in Falmouth, Cornwall.  Family legend says they may have lived in Hills Road, though I am not at all sure.
I fear that a possible mistranscription might have hidden them from view...
Very best wishes, keith

Mary is there I think - try using one of the surname variants search options, or try PAUL

Tom and Amber,
Thanks very much for responding so swiftly to my request.
Looks like I'll have to concentrate a bit harder, and use my imagination more!  I've never quite mastered this Findmypast website, even though I've still got a few credits to burn on there...
regards, keith

You can find Mabel Evelyn pretty quickly by simply searching Mabel N* living in Cambridge  ;)

Hi again avm228,
Yes, that will do very nicely indeed, thank you!  That baptism might be a clue now to which section of Mill Road Cemetery Arthur William's mother and father might have been buried in in 1937 and 1938 respectively, if the family were attending Holy Trinity (just around the corner from Cambridge Market Place)
8, Emery Street is just around the corner from 30, Mill Road (the Convenience Sore "Nip In" today), which is where his parents lived for at least 20+ years.
All part of my neck of the woods, so I'll have a good look around there tomorrow.  Now, let's have a look at the 1911 again...
regards, keith
...and JenB (posts crossing in the ether), I'll use your suggestion too in the great hue and cry that has developed, and that, I feel, will now be resolved very soon with all these excellent prompts!

Brilliant!  All done and dusted thanks to all those sensible suggestions.  I need to exercise more imagination in these things much more in the future.
Mary PAUL (sic) aged 92, born in Falmouth, Cornwall was living at another number 8, Pembroke Street, with her 70-year-old daughter Eliza Kieth (sic).  First time I've ever come across my mis-spelled forename used for the fairer sex, I must say.
And here's a little puzzler based on the (presumably mistranscribed) place of birth for Arthur William's wife Evelyn:  "Lorrin Chinbuck", Ohio, U.S.A.
Any ideas, anyone...?
Many thanks for all this,
keith
