I've always grumbled that WDYTYA is about well-known people, and ordinary people also have some good stories.

This is about ordinary people and I look forward to seeing it.

Find My Past - New television series
« Reply #11 on: Thursday 20 October 11 21:58 BST (UK) »
I cannot find any posts on this but I am sure someone will put me right if there is.

A new family history programme on Yesterday channel, Thursdays at 9pm

All I can say is don't bother!!!

This first programme is about Dunkirk. So much stating the obvious, too many adverts and too much re-capping and re-capping ......and re-capping.

Shame  :-\

What I'd like to know is why they picked 3 random people who had no idea about their family history ::)
How were they chosen?
There must be lots of rootschatters who would have loved to take part and meet 'experts'.
It was quite interesting, but there was some repetition.

I agree, it all felt a little bit desperate.    As is so often the case in programmes these days, far too much repetition.    Reminded me at times of some of those ghastly training days we had to attend at work, where the mantra was 'Tell them what you're going to tell them, then tell them, and then tell them what you've just told them'.         Makes you feel terribly old to see how remote the second world war is to some people today.   They might as well have been talking about Waterloo at times!

I've just seen part of it.  I'm not sure what to say about it, because so many people have wanted to see a programme like WDYTYA about ordinary people, but this wasn't what I expected.

Don't want to be negative, so I'd be interested in the thoughts of anyone else who saw it (particularly if they did better than me and stuck with it all the way through)

I just posted a comment on this thread:

and then saw Winterbloom's entry come up on the home page, so there are two topics.   I felt that it was so dumbed down that I didn't even stick it out.

p.s. perhaps that's a bit harsh.   It's not the fault of the younger generation that nobody teaches history in school any more, but covering basic facts in bite size chunks over and over and over and over again (quite agree with Winterbloom about the training mantras!) doesn't exactly make for an interesting programme.  Still, at least they did assume that everyone had heard of the 2nd World War - I suppose that's something...

p.p.s. getting seriously crabby now...  I look forward to the next edition of the Oxford Dictionary.  It will only have to be pocket sized since the entire English vocabulary seems to have been reduced to two words, "wow" and "amazing"

Not just me then!

I've realised there are two threads on this programme - this is the other one:
