Wales to the USA around 1900-1920
« on: Friday 21 October 11 17:55 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I have started on ex husband's family tree and knew I would have problems with three generations of John Smiths!  But I have just been told of the possibility that a family member went to the USA to Germantown Pensylvania and had something to do with candy.  Manufacturing or selling I have no idea.
His name is William James Smith born 1880 in Whitchurch, Glamorgan, Wales and I would imagine probably left between 1900 and 1920. Where would he have sailed from and would New York his port of arrival.
If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be most grateful,
Thank you,
Abiam2

It's hard to be sure where he may have sailed to, but I would think New York or Philadelphia would be likely options.  You can try checking New York passenger lists from that time frame for free with registration at www.ellisisland.org.

If you can get an exact date of birth for him, it might be helpful.

Hi,
I have just had a look and find that there are Irish and Scottish and lots from 'Great Britain' the Welsh , if there were any sailing, don't seem to have claimed their Welshness!  So where I go from now I have no idea.
Maybe time to go back to the myriad of John Smiths.
