Hughes Family - Ruabon
« on: Saturday 22 October 11 02:34 BST (UK) »
By the 1851 census at Morton Above -
Thomas Hughes b.c.1788 Llandysilio (Shoemaker) & wife Susan b.c.1801 Hope.
Son Thomas Hughes b.c.1828 Ruabon & dau Mary Hughes b.c.1824 Ruabon.
Any help with marriage of Thomas & Susan &  baptisms for this family would be much appreciated.
Karen  :)

Hi Karen

I've looked in the St Mary's, Ruabon parish records and don't see the baptisms for the children  - are you sure the mother is Susan, as there is no Thomas/Susan parent combination showing ?

Also, I've had a quick look at the Blackwell non-conformist Index for the Rhos (Moreton Above) chapels and, again, I don't see them. They might have been baptised elsewhere.

Added - I think that Thomas snr is b. Llantysilio - i have those records too!

In case it's of any use, here's a possible baptism for Thomas, snr:

Llantysilio 14th April 1788 Thomas s/o Thomas Hughes and Jane (nee Davies) of Llandynan (a township in the parish)

:D Thanks for checking for me & for the bapt of Thomas, snr.
Thomas, jnr I'm as sure as I can be about mother's name as Susan as it's on his New South Wales, Australia BDM death record also.
As you say probably baptised elsewhere. His wife was born Ruabon but was baptised in Llangollen.

Just a couple of thoughts:
The Blackwell Index has two chapels for Ruabon
Inependent: Baptism coverage 1814-1837
Providence : Baptism coverage  1832-1837
Obviously this latter one does not cover the period of Mary and Thomas' birth.

Perhaps these children were the product of a first marriage but Thomas only remembered Susan(nah?) as his mother.
I don't think anything is confidently known before the 1851 census and....

There is a marriage of Thomas Hughes to Susannah Hughes in Wrexham 1841

I found on Familysearch.org a baptism for a Sarah Hughs to Thomas Hughs & Susanah Williams born 26-2-1826, baptised 29-4-1827 at Independent, Rhosllanerchrugog, Dengighshire. (Hughes spelt here without the e.)

This could be a sister to Mary & Thomas. Does The Blackwell Index cover this area? :-\

I looked up Rhos & found " a village originally within the ancient parish of Raubon and the district was referred to as Morton Above. In 1844 Morton Above became part of the newly created parish of Rhosllanerchrugog.
This ties in with the family on the 1851 census living in Rhos, Morton Above.

Your thought of 2 marriages is also entirely possible.

Hi Karen

I did look in the two Rhos chapels listed in Blackwell for Thomas and Mary but didn't find them. I'll have another check for them tomorrow as the info is on my other computer.

Also, I've had a quick look at the Blackwell non-conformist Index for the Rhos (Moreton Above) chapels and, again, I don't see them. They might have been baptised elsewhere

Hi Karen

I've checked through some of the most likely chapels in the Blackwell again and have found these two - both Rhos Independant:

17 Aug1812 - William (b.10 July) s/o Thomas Hughs, shoemender,  and Sara
29 April 1827 - Sarah (b. 26 Feb 1826) d/o Thomas Hughes, shoemaker, and Susannah (mn. Williams)

Note that the 'e' is in Hughes in the Blackwell!
