Dear Roots chat, my gggfather George Holmes born April 1845 came to Australia aged about 7 from supposedly San Francisco. His father John Holmes, was a typefounder and his mothers maiden name was Caroline Gager. She had been born in England in 1800. Cannot find their arrival in Australia from
San Francisco and looking for information has been impossible, due to the Quake/fire in 1906.
George had 9 siblings according to Caroline's death certificate (she remarried in l852 here in a
ustralia to a William Fletcher. Only two came to austalia with his Alfred b. 1838 and his sister Rosa born 1840. On George's death certificate in l918 it says his father was hotel keeper in San Francisco. His sisters wedding notice in the Sydney Morning Herald in l862 says daughter of the late John Holmes, Pyrmont, typefounder. Not even sure if the father John made it here to Austalia. Lot of information I know but gives you a complete picture. The lack of information on the arrival to Australia puzzles me the most. To make matters worse George went under 2 names, George Holmes and George Fletcher. He was awarded an ISO by the King under Fletcher and won many a championship
sailing event under the name Holmes. Thanks for any help camelot
