I have added a close-up snap of the lady.
Does anyone recognise her, please?

Hello Christine, thank you for your interest (10 weeks to go). I thought I would see what transpires here. I will 'trawl' the newspapers from probably 1928 or so on. If this is my mother (born 12 Mar 1924) then that closes in on when this photo was taken. I take it as my mother as she had only 1 other photo in her lot that I have - that of her sister Elizabeth. So newspapers here I come.
Thanks you both Christine and gnu.

Hi Robert

The larger scan of the building does suggest it's more 'square edged' than I thought so I'd say a modern-ish building. I can't think that it's a hospital or school as there are no obvious medical staff or school children. If it's a civic building then that leaves council offices, law courts, etc.

I've sharpened the lady's face and adjusted the contrast to make her less blurry.

Sir Charles Philips Trevelyan, 3rd Baronet was Lord Lieutenant of Northumberland at the time that the photo of mine was taken.
His wife was Lady Mary Trevelyan (Trevelyan married Mary Katherine Bell, a younger half-sister of Gertrude Bell and the daughter of Sir Thomas Bell).
I wonder if the lady receiving the flowers is her. From what I can gather so far she was well loved and a great supporter of many organisations in the community of Northumberland. Their home was Wallington Hall.

However, the only newspapers I can search from here are 19th Century. Does anybody know of an archive for early 20th Century newspapers I can access please?
Sir Charles was born 1870 – d 1958 - the lady appears to fit by age in my photo. I hope!

Hi again Robert

As I said in my earlier posting, Mary Bell (b. 1882)  was in her 50s in the 1930s. She was the second wife of Charles Trevelyan (married 1904). I would say that the woman in the photo was younger than this:

Quote
Mary Bell (?), Charles Trevelyan's wife would have been in her 50s, I think, in the 1930s so not her.

I think that she (Mary Bell) might be more likely to be the woman at the back in front of the open window - close to the Lord Lieutenant (the man in the hat)

I had a look at photos of Wallington Hall last night and it didn't appear to be the same.

Small photo of it here ~ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wallington_Hall

PS - I'm now starting to wonder about dates, etc. I think I've looked at the image for too long   :-X

Has anyone had a go at enhancing the right hand side of the photo? There is a woman holding a programme which appears to have an image of a building at the top and possibly text underneath?

Forensic staff do this on crime programmes all the time but it's beyond my expertise and available technology.

Added - I did this on my other machine last night - had to come and get it.  I don't think the original image is sharp enough to see it in any detail.
