Hi Kit

I think it says Strumous Abcesses. Not sure but it could be TB swellings of the lymph nodes according to some Googling. I'm not a medic  :-\

thanks gnu.  Sounds awful.  I know that lots of my Lancashire lot (with chemical industries/coal mining and terrible living conditions) died of TB but didn't really consider places like Nairn, with the sea and beach so close, to be a contender.  I suppose everyone lived in quite close quarters and things like TB would have spread like wildfire.

Cheers, Kit

A definition that I found gave "Struma"...An abnormal enlargement of the Thyroid Gland: Goitre.

I think it can be that too, Carol. It seems to cover a wide range of conditions. If they were 'abscesses over the body', it wouldn't be goitre though.   There's a recent thread about it here:

Reading the last posting on that thread - sounds horrid  :(

Yes - saw that whe I Googled  but there are more discussions on the medical pages and they were 'over the body'  on the cert. not just the goitre so I think it would relate to the other def:
