WILLIAM ROSS - trying to confirm birth details

Yes I did quite a bit of searching around my GGG Grandmother. Her name was Jane Dow and she died on 5th December 1858 at Aultonside in Orbliston and is apparently interred in Dipple Churchyard. There's no headstone in Dipple churchyard marking Janes grave - I contacted the Moray Burial Ground Research Group and apparently that's not unusual. There's no data in their database either for Jane (for buried or non buried headstones).

William then remarried in 1859 (married Margaret Asher on 10th June 1859).

Not sure how to make use of this info - any thoughts ?

Marriage of John Ross to Isabel Hay, 20 JUN 1816 Elgin, Moray, Scotland on IGI. Her birth is estimated as 1795 Elgin.

Also, Birth of Margaret, to John and Isabel, 06/02/1818 at Elgin.

William and Jane married in Dallas, Moray, 26 July 1845. William is noted on Libindx as a Builder/Mason, and dying in the USA.

yes searching on Scotlands People - I'm still coming to terms with the search function there and tend to cast my net too wide using wildcards and end up swamped with the returns. I'm trying to figure out how to refine it a bit.

IGI is the International Genealogical Index available to search for free here www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=igi/search_IGI.asp&clear_form=true

Great free resource. The main thing to note is whether entries are actual extract from records (either the OPRs or statutory registers) or have been submitted by LDS members (these entries need care taken and need to be verified elsewhere as they can be plain wrong). Each entry has a section under 'Messages' which confirms where the info has come from.

Scottish entries tail off around 1874/5 when the mormons stopped loading on the Scottish indexes.

Main points to remember:

Keep options open on spellings. I tend to only use the wildcard symbol of '*' to pick up on spelling variants. For example, searching for an Isabel, I would normally search for Is*b*l*. Searching for a MacDonald, I would search as M*cDon*.

To help you narrow down options, try IGI first and from there double check on SP. For example, if you do what is called a 'parent search' on IGI, it should show any children to a couple/couples with the names you are searching for. To do a parent search on IGI, from the search screen, just put in parents' full names on the r/h side and then British Isles/Scotland. You can add additional search filters, county and/or time ranges subject to the results you get.

Have a play around, you'll soon get the hang of it!

Hi Monica - YES!!!!! thanks very much (and what a useful resource that site looks like it might be).

I've been following your advice in subsequent posts today and it looks like this is my GGGG Grandparents and their daughters. Interesting that my GGG Grandfather William Ross (the subject of this post) isn't there too. I don't know where he's actually buried yet - he remarried after his first wife died so perhaps there's a separate grave. That's one of my next things to check out.
