Wee mammy,

How old was the David Black when he died? (We might be able to find him on a Census if we knew when he was born.)

If he was a reasonably young man, then perhaps his wife re-married and that's why you can't find her death under Black or Johnston?

There is a marriage (on Scotland's People) for a Matlida Black & a David Elliot in 1887 in Bridgeton, Glasgow which I had a look at but it's not her (this Matilda was 20 years old)

Also, what was your ggmother, their daughter's full maiden name and do you know if she had any siblings? (Her marriage certificate might give a clue if any of the witnesses have the same surname.)

Anne

The witnesses on the marriage certificate for ggrandmother were John Robertson and Catherine Carney. i don't know if she had any siblings, i was hoping to find a census with that information

santi, My ggrandmother was Jane Black born 1838 Glasgow St. Andrews according to the catholic baptisms on SP

Hard one this one!

Could this be young Jane, with mother and her family in 1841:

Mary Johnstone 50 b. Scotland
Matilda Johnstone 20, piercer
Sarah Johnstone 18, piercer
Jane Black 3

Address: Barter's Land, Barony Lanarkshire

Don't be put off by the Matilda showing under her maiden name. Scottish women never 'lost' their maiden name and you will often see married women using their maiden name as above particularly in the earlier censuses.

The 1841 census is the most limited in terms of info. Relationships within the household were not included and ages for everyone over 15 yrs olds were supposed to have aged rounded down to the nearest 5 years.

I can only see Jane's details on the Roman Catholic registers on Scotlands People  :-\ Hard to say what other children there may be at this stage (given they are so hard to find on records).

I also found this possible for David in 1851, Sancti:

Willm Smith 74 wright Retired b. Paisley
Mary Smith 73 b. Paisley
David Black 48, son, H L Weaver, b. Johnston, Renfrewshire
Willm Sloan 14, grandchild b. Johnston, Renfrewshire
Grace Black 13 grandchild Warehouse Sewer b. Glasgow

Address: 4 Stow Place, Paisley Renfrewshire

I am wondering whether David's father James (from the info already posted) died and mother Mary Adams remarried a William Smith (family above). From IGI there is this marriage:

Mary ADAM and William SMITH m. 16 Nov. 1833  in Low Church, Paisley

Just checked FreeCen www.freecen.org.uk/cgi/search.pl - they also show Grace (for Grace!) and David shows as unmarried son.... :-\

A check at a time, eh!

Monica .

Added: Also, always the possibility that Grace is daughter of a sibling of David.
