Can anyone identify this place?
« on: Friday 28 October 11 18:56 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I'm after some help with a place name.

Can anyone identify the place in Gloucestershire. It was written in 1871 by a London enumerator. It has been transcribed as Rumrith. I think I may have found this person (Ann Crane nee Workman) in later census returns in London as coming from "Wotton Drup" and Wotton under edge. I cannot be certain that this is the same person though. The Ann I can be sure of is the one in 1871.

Looking at other samples of the enumerators writing I think this may well begin with 'R' as the letter 'B' seems to have a hook curving to the left at the bottom.

For reference the details are: Class: RG10; Piece: 179; Folio: 17; Page: 27;

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your input.

I had a look on the map also and couldn't find anything obvious. I thought it may have been a local name for a place. There is a village in Suffolk called Keddington, but the locals call it 'Kitton!'

I think it is a B - the curve is hidden on the line.  No idea what it is though!  Have you tried looking for places near Wootton on Genuki?

Hi Andrea,

Have just tried looking for churches in a 10 mile radius of Wotton under edge on Genuki, but nothing.

Hi Malky,

Ann is listed as being aged 50.

The ages I have for her in:

1861 census age 39 (1822)

1871 census age 50 (1821).

Perhaps the enumerator misheard the place name. It could end in 'ick' rather than 'ith' in which case there are several places in the old registration districts some of which are in the same district as Wotton under Edge. e.g. Redwick, Northwick, Randwick. There are several Ann Workman (s) born around the 1820s in some of these old registration districts. Good Luck!
