which george hornsby is right?
« on: Monday 31 October 11 16:20 GMT (UK) »
trying to track down my g-grandfather George Hornsby, but have come across a mystery, I have one that is born in 1869 in Shirley, and one born in stepney in 1869, both in the army at the same time, both have the same christian name of father, both living in the same area on the 1901 and 1911 census and both working on the railway in the docks, so which one is which?? the one from Shirley marries a Mary Jane Wilson in around 1890, (who is from stepney), but when I look for proof of birth for him I hit a brickwall, any help would be great, as this one is getting very frustrating

I think that George and Mary Jane's birthplaces might have been reversed on the 1901 census - here she is in 1891:

RG12; Piece 918; Folio 127; Page 36 - 51, Melbourne Street, Southampton
Mary Jane WILSON  Head  Wid  47   Laundress  b. Maidstone
Mary Jane HORNSBY  Dau  Married  b. Portsmouth
Chas. WILSON  Son  20  Married  Stoker  b. Portsmouth
Elizth. WILSON  Dau-in-law  19  b. Battersea
William WILSON  Son  17  Rivetter  b. Jarrow, Durham
James  WILSON  Son  15  Rivetter  b. Jarrow, Durham
John WILSON  Son  14  Rivetter  b. Rawcliffe, Northumberland
Frederick WILSON  Son  10  b. Southampton
Martha WILSON  Dau  8  b. Southampton

I can only see one George Hornsby the right age in Hampshire in 1901 - married to Mary Jane and living with brother-in-law Charles WILSON.

thanks for that Manchester rambler, looks like I've been lead up the garden path by ancestry again, had something like this before, when it showed census details saying my family had come from germany, when in fact it was Guernsey, it's enough to drive you mad sometimes, still a big thank you for looking it up for me, did not have the extra details that you found, those will come in very handy.
