Hersey baptisms near Petworth

I'm looking for a John Hersey, son of John, and he's not on the Petworth list from Sussex OPC. He was indentured to the Earl of Egremont in 1809 until the age of 19. If indenture was for 7 years, that makes him 12, birthdate 1797. He may have been the John who went on to be a butler in St George Hanover Square in 1851, unmarried. That census gives his birthdate as 1801, Petworth. I can't find a baptism that fits on Sussex OPC.

There's also a William Hersey (also father John, I think), who was indentured to the Earl in 1813 until the age of 20.

There's a William Hearsey baptized in Petworth 24 Feb 1799, son of John & Mary, who might fit. But John was a chairmaker, and doesn't seem to fit the profile of being too poor to raise a child to the age of 14 (as stated in the indenture).

Any help? Any ideas?

Hi Judy

I'll have a look in the Petworth and nearby registers next time I go to the West Sussex Records Office.

 John was a chairmaker when William was baptised but anything could have happened in 13 yrs - illness, injury or lack of work- so this wouldn't rule him out.
