In the 1800s Crewe was what is now Crewe Green and was in the parish of Wybunbury so that is where the baptism is most likely to be. The church of St Michael & All Angels at Crewe Green did not open until 1857.

Some families from the old Crewe did use Barthomley Church - I have the PRs for Barthomley and there is no Samuel Dodd baptised there around the year you say.

The nearest church to Crewe Green was actually Haslington St Matthews so that is another one to try if not at Wybunbury.

Thank you for your information Peter.  I was able to get a copy of the Parish Register entry for Samuel's 1st marriage to Ellen Bostock in Coppenhall.  At the time I couldn't read which Parish Samuel was living in at the time of the marriage - but now you've mentioned Barthomley I can see that's the name of the Parish.

I also managed to get a copy of Samuel's marriage certificate (2nd marriage) but unfortunately, and as I feared, no father's name is recorded.  I guess this is going to be a "brick wall".

Regards

Helen

Hi Helen
I don't know if you noticed but Samuels surname was only one D -  Dod on his marriage register to Ellen.

I've looked through baptisms for Samuel Dod around the time 1806 - 1810 and found nothing around the Barthomley/Coppenhall area, although there are many Samuel Dod's registered.

Kind regards

Hi Helen,

I just came across  your message and I am also researching this family line. My line continues from Samuel and Ellen's daughter Charlotte. Which line are you following?

I am sorry to say that I am also having no luck in finding Samuels parents.

Lisa

Hi Lisa

I'm following Charlotte's line down too!  Sarah Ellen born 1870 and, I believe, Charlotte's eldest child was my great grandmother.  Sarah's son George was my dad's dad.  How about you?  Do you have and details of Charlotte's death?  I believe she may have died in 1918 with the death being registered as Bayley rather than Bailey but I've not had chance to confirm this.

I'll let you know if I find out anything on Samuel.

Take care

Helen

Hi Helen,

Charlottes son, George William Bailey, is, I believe, my great, great grandad. This would make him Sarah's half brother?

George's son, john william Bailey was my great grandad and his son Clifford Frederick Bailey was my grandad.

I also think that Charlotte died in 1918, but I have not confirmed this yet. I only started on this side of the tree very recently and I am continuing where my aunt left off!

I too think I found Bailey spelt Bayley but I know we continued to spell it Bailey after that (my maidan name)

If I find any more out I will let you know,

Take care
Lisa

On the marriage record to Ellen BOSTOCK there are 2 witnesses: Ralph HORTON & John LEIGH
have you followed either of these to see if they are:
a) related to either party
b) if friends there maybe a common place name

Samuel maybe of Barthomley at the time of his marriage because he was working in the area, he may however have been baptised at amother church in the area probably where hois parent(s) were living, or may have been taken 'home' if the poarents were living away.

I was baptised at St Michael's Coppenhall and have never lived in the area...
