Gilmour St Prison, Paisley

Can somebody please point me in the right direction.........

Trying to trace William Foulis b 1865, Edinburgh, parents Robert Foulis and Emily Moffat.

Have copies of census records from DOB up to 1871.

In 1881 census there is a William Foulis inmate of Gilmour Prison, occupation Pastry Cook

Is there any way I can find records of the prison to help me in verifying if this is 'my' William Foulis??

William Gillespie Foulis later turns up in Canada in 1901/1911 census records married to Edith Alice Haynes.  Again cannot find record of arrival in Canada or marriage to Edith, I understand they married in Canada.  Again any advice where I might find these records would be of great help though I think this post might need moving??

The Paisley Prison records  are held by the National Archives Scotland in Edinburgh. Sadly not available online.

Not sure where in the world you're based but if you're near Paisley, the Paisley Daily express archives (fiche I'm afraid) worth a look too as trial details may be in paper.


Wee tip - if you're going to Edinburgh I should have said you need to 'pre-order' prison records as they're not onsite. So if you give them a ring beforehand they'll have them ready for you.

Unfortunately am in Devon so unable to get to Scotland, is there some kind Rootschatter who may be able to help?  Have written to Archives asking for help, so will do the same for the Paisley Express.
