1861 census - can you please find her? COMPLETED WITH THANKS
« on: Saturday 05 November 11 13:27 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I am looking for  Jean Cruickshank ms Croll who died in 1862, Garvock (although it is spelt Croal)

I have her, I think, in the 1851 census at Upper Tulloch, Garvock aged abt 78, born abt 1773 Fetteresso.

I cannot find her in the 1861 census so would appreciate some help in locating her.

Thanks in anticipation ...

Did she have a daughter Ann who married John Birch?

You might like to check this one just in case. Unfortunately, there is no place of birth given for Jean in the Ancestry transcript:
Jean Crookshanks, mother-in-law, age 88, b 1773, Pauper formerly A Servant, living Aird, Wigtownshire, with Birch family.

I have checked out the above and I don't think this is her because all the children were born in Kincardinshire and having googled Wigtonshire, it is a long way away and this family didn't move very far at all.  Thanks for looking though, any help is much appreciated.

Perhaps I should also mention that the name Jean interchanges with Jane (happens alot in my Scottish ancestry!)

Thanks in anticipation ...

You might well be right and this is not your Jean, but people did get around more than you might think.

I will have another look for her.

I think I might have located her in 1861  ;D:

1st Cot-House
Upper Tulloch
Garvock
Jane Cruickshank, head, 40, b Stonehaven,Kincardineshire, farm servant's widow
Mary Cruickshank, daur, 21, dom servt
Jane Roal, age 90, mother in law, b Fettercairn, Kincardineshire, ploughman's widow

I can see how Croal could become Roal, either in Ancestry's transcription (which have lots of errors) or it might even be written as Roal in the original, as the sounds are very similar.

Thank you Ruskie!  That's her; I hadn't thought of searching for Roal!

A fresh set of eyes to search is always great when one can't find something so thank you.

You're welcome Westwood1.

She was quite well hidden.  ;) I didn't think to search under Roal either - I searched for Jean, and then Jane, no surname and approximate birth date and county, then checked through the list of results to try to find a surname that looked 'wrong'. Glad she is found!  :)
