Can't read the District name
« on: Sunday 06 November 11 13:20 GMT (UK) »
This person died in the Limerick workhouse but I'm puzzled by the wording after "District of" - can anyone help please? Also does anyone know if the Limerick workhouse records are available to search? Thanks.

presumably one of the Limerick city Registrar's districts within the Limerick poor Law Union area - which are :

  Limerick No. 1 (St. Mary's)
  Limerick No. 2 (St. Munchin's)
  Limerick No. 3 (St. John's)
  Limerick No. 4 (St. Michael's)

agree with Dazey999's reading of the location - the workhouse was located in the townland of Coolraine, which is in the civil parish of St. Munchin's, and the registrar's district of the same name.

see : Coolraine townland (OSI map)

Possibly the first part is St Lelia, I found a section on a website that said :

"In the Roman Catholic arrangements the county of the city is divided into the parishes or districts of St. Mary, St. John, St. Michael, St. Patrick, and St. Lelia."

If you read down there is a specific section on St Lelia and it does say that the 'The House of Industry, founded in 1774' was in the same area and I belive that this is the name of the workhouse

The website is :

Hope this helps

Civil records didn't use references to RC parishes as districts

.....

correction - looks like there's a townland boundary very close to the workhouse complex, which would mean it is located in the townland adjacent to Coolraine named Farranshone More (St. Nicholas Civil parish) - but still within the registrar's district of Limericy City No. 2 (St. Munchin's).

If you read through the web site is also says the following :

"St. Lelia’s parish is composed of the parishes of St. Munchin and St. Nicholas within the liberties north of the river, and that of Killeely in county Clare. The chapel, situated at Thomond-gate, is a large plain cruciform edifice, built in 1744: it is the first R.C. place of worship publicly erected in Limerick since the revolution."

And I belive somone already mentioned it could be St. Munchin, so the most probably transcription is St Lelia Munchin.
