Marriage witnesses
« on: Sunday 06 November 11 23:15 GMT (UK) »
I have just received a copy marriage certificate for a wedding conducted at Glasbury Parish Church, Brecon and Radnor, in 1847. I was surprised to find four witnesses recorded.

Can anyone suggest why this might be? Why did the vicar allow/require this?

I have not yet been able to identify the witnesses, and the bride and groom, whilst providing local addresses, do not appear to have any family connection to the area. There is a hint, however, that the bride may have had links to a family of Irish travellers. Both were of full age.

I am keen to learn more about this couple and wonder if the multiplicity of witnesses may provide some clue. Any suggestions will be most welcome.

The law required a minimum of two credible witnesses, but there is no upper limit. There are about twenty witnesses on the marriage certificate of The Queen and Prince Philip
