This looks like his birth as he had children named James and Elizabeth:

3 June 1855 St Ninians
Adam Cowan s/o James Cowan and Elizabeth MacDonald

As it is an 1855 birth, it would be worth getting the certificate from Scotlands People as there is quite a lot of extra info on 1855 certs:

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

It's pay to view but very reasonable

Sorry - I missed giving you the Cowans in 1861:

Syke, St Ninians

James Cowan, 36, blacksmith
Elisabeth, w, 35
Alexander, 11
Elizabeth, 9
Mary S, 7
Adam, 5
Jane G, 3, b. Dunipace, Stirlingshire
James, 5 mths
All b. St Ninian except Jane

Also, Adam died in 1923, Larbet Asylum (usual residence - 16 East Murrayfied, Bannockburn)  but his wife gave wrong info regarding his parents on death cert. Their marriage cert 1882, St Ninian, confirms the parents that I have listed.
