24th Field Regiment RA
« on: Monday 07 November 11 17:47 GMT (UK) »
Does anybody out there have any information on the 24th Field Regiment RA and their part in the retreat to Dunkirk?

My Grandfather was with them at this time and wounded with a grenade fragment which has begged the question, how close did the Germans get to him?

Any assistance/information would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

David

This may be too simple an answer, but grenades were usually hand-thrown, and the range unlikely to be more than 30-40 yards.  They could also be fired from adapted rifles and that would add to the possible range.
Google shows there was a history of the regiment published in 1947.  You might be able to borrow a copy through inter-library loan.

A,

Just to let you know I managed to get a copy of the War Diary for the Dunkirk Campaign, they were firing at the Germans at point blank range on at leat two occasions, that might account for it.

Many thanks
