Brightlingsea - Church of the New Jerusalem
« on: Tuesday 08 November 11 13:53 GMT (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know if the records for this church (Brightlingsea New Church) are online. On the SEAX site there is a drop down in the parish part but no available records. I can see burials in the All Saints Church pages as they were certified by a representative of the New Church, however i haven't been able to find baptisms or marriages. I know that Familysearch has some transcriptions but i was hoping to find more recent ones, ie late 1800s early 1900s. On one website it says that the records are at the national archives.

Do you have names of people you are looking for, or just general records for that particular church?
regards.

Hi Paco

I was hoping to check for 4 surnames. Martin being my main research, however it would be nice to have access to them for distant relatives. My family very rarely used All Saints Church except for interment, opting for the Wesleyan and New Church for baptisms and marriages.

Hi

When civil registration began 1st July 1837 most non-conformist churches did a deal with the government. In return for handing over their church registers the government would recognise them as legal documents. A later smaller deposit of non-conformist registers was made in 1855. The historic records held by the government are deposited in the government archives = The National Archives, which is why these non-conformist registers are held there and why pre 1837 non-conformist registers have a better survival rate in many cases than post 1837 non-conformist registers, since non-conformist registers have a much poorer survival rate than Anglican registers.

Is the church still in existence? If the registers are deposited with Essex Record Office you would expect to see them in their catalogue. If not have you contacted the church (if still there) to see if they still hold their historic registers post 1837?

Regards

Valda

Hi Valda

Thanks for that, yes the New Church is still in use however the Wesleyan Church is no longer there. I notice that the Wesleyan records are listed in the 1998 accessions to repositories, have you any idea what that is about please.

Hi

I think you will have to ask that specific question of Essex Record Office since there are no further details in the catalogue. It could be just further church papers and no registers since you would expect to find them in the Essex Ancestors index.
It might also be worth checking the records for Colchester Wesleyan Methodist Circuit though the records deposited seem only to go up to 1890 which may not be late enough for you. I think Brightlingsea was in that circuit

D/NM 2/1/24
1837-1890

in the catalogue under Colchester

Hi Kevin,
I am also researching my family from Brightlingsea and we have a family member with the surname of Martin. I found out that an ancestor called Fleming laid a foundation stone at the New Church when it was in New Street. All our family were members of the New Church and I was Christened there. My email is *
Very best wishes Marion

I too have  ancestors who were at that Church
Essex Records office does not have records - what records there are are at National archives and are on Familysearch.

There are some Wesleyan Methodist records at ERO, cant remember if Brightlngsea is there - but SEAX will tell you.
