Hi Bowman and thanks for your advice.

May I ask just one further question concerning resolution size, while I've got someone knowledgeable to ask!

My scanner's highest resolution is 2400 pixles, but even 1200 results in massive file sizes. Does your advice mean that I should scan at this 2400 level whatever?

Sorry to seem dim, and thanks so much for your advice

As you say, to scan at those sorts of levels produces massive files, I would be inclined to scan at something around the 600 level, which is fine for what you want to do, and as you can see from Pats scan which was at 6oo, it produced a very reasonable image to work with.

Seems to me a very worthwhile thread for anyone wanting to scan manuscripts, as I may get round to doing eventually.(!)
                          Thanks Bowman

I don't really want to get into an argument. Especially with someone who is armed and dangerous. But a general rule in IT is that you can only manipulate data that exists. So you can always change a colour scan into a B&W copy (while saving the original), but you cannot go in the opposite direction.
