A chapel in Theale Reading Berks
« on: Thursday 10 November 11 23:41 GMT (UK) »
Hi.  I have seen reference to a marriage taking place in Bethesda Chapel, Theale, Reading, Berks.  I have googled Bethesda Chapel but nothing really comes up for Theale.  Does anyone know where it is in Theale or if it doesnt exist anymore, where it was?

Thanks  :)

Hi MarksWife  :)

The name 'Bethesda' suggests that it was a Methodist chapel.  Theale had one by 1879, and it was still there in 1960-61 but had gone by 1965 (according to www.old-maps.co.uk).  It was at the east end of the High Street.

How about asking http://thealevillage.com - I bet they'll know where the records are  :D

Good luck,
Carol

Added:  There was also a Congregational chapel but I don't think they'd call that 'Bethesda'.

Theale Primitive Methodist was part of the Bradfield Circuit - records were kept in circuit registers, not sure where they are (the BRO website, usually a good way to find where registers are, is confusing on this).

The chapel was there 1868-1992.

Hi,
Bethseda was opposite the Falcon and was a Congregationalist Chapel. I have sent you a personal email with some of its history.

In which case the records are at the BRO and the building is still there, or was when I photographed it a few years ago.
